Zooming & Panning in the Viewport

When you first log in to G-EGD, the full globe appears, populated with either the basemap or Landsat imagery.

Depending on your zoom level, you can interact with imagery in different ways:

  • Zoom Levels 3-8 You can view imagery footprints are available for the selected imagery catalog (unless viewing the DG Archive catalog filter).
    • Zoom Levels 3-8 Areas with available imagery for the selected timeframe are indicated by an orange imagery footprint.
    • Zoom Levels 9-10 The imagery footprint changes to a color-coded polygon. The image acquisition date appears in the polygon.
  • Zoom Level 11 & Higher Hosted imagery is available for the selected imagery catalog. If you enable imagery footprints, the polygon displays over hosted imagery.
  • Zoom Levels 13 & Higher The Carousel is available and displays the selected imagery catalog.

Additionally, you can pan the viewport to find the exact location you are looking for.

Zooming In & Out

Zoom in to see more detail or zoom out for more context using any of the following methods:

  • Area of Interest Select the Draw Polygon icon , then define an Area of Interest (AOI) (see Defining an Area of Interest). The viewport zooms to the area you defined.

  • Double-Click Double-click anywhere in the viewport to zoom in one level. The viewport re-centers at the point you double-clicked.

  • Keyboard Shortcut Press Z, then enter the desired zoom level to zoom to that level.

    Pressing Z, then 1, then 3 zooms to level 13.

  • Keyboard Shortcut Press G H to zoom out to the world view or to your home bookmark (see Setting a Home Location).

  • Keyboard Shortcut Press SHIFT and the +(plus) key to zoom in, or SHIFT and the -(minus) key to zoom out.

  • Mouse Scroll Use the scroll wheel on your mouse to quickly zoom in or out.

  • Mouse Drag Press SHIFT, then drag a rectangle using your mouse. Release the mouse button to zoom to the enclosed area.

  • Zoom Buttons In the top right corner of the viewport, select the Zoom In icon to zoom in one level or select the Zoom Out icon to zoom out one level.

A small legend in the lower left corner of the viewport shows the current zoom level and a simple distance bar.

Panning the Viewport

Pan the viewport using either of these methods:

  • Keyboard Arrows Use the keyboard arrows to scroll.

  • Mouse Drag Click-and-drag in the viewport.
